Cricket Results & Fixtures

Runs galore - 5/07/10

Hoppers cricketers kept spectators on their toes on Wednesday evening with no less than thirteen sixes as they blasted their way to the highest score in the seventeen year history of the Boddington’s Village cricket league.

Host Fulwood & Broughton had no inkling of what was to come as opener Matt Hughes patiently waited until the fourth ball of the first over before taking a single. Craig McIntyre then set the tone of the innings with a six from the first ball he faced.

Two further sixes saw McIntyre race to twenty two before a bowling change in the fifth over saw the opener bowled and a midweek league rarity, a wicket maiden.

This was to be the home sides only respite as Hoppers batsmen lost no further wickets with six having to retire with twenty five runs or more scored.

Notable performances from Richard Morton who finished his innings by hitting the last two balls he faced for six and from Glen Steel whose twenty six came from only eight balls.

Mark Balshaw, arguably Hoppers biggest hitter, may be facing disciplinary action as the only one of nine batsmen not to hit a six.

The final score from twenty overs was 231 for 1 an improvement of thirty runs on the previous record.

Opening bowlers Cameron Berry and Craig McIntyre’s different styles ripped the heart out of F & B’s innings to put the home side at 40 for 6 after six overs. A run out and wickets for Mark Edwards, Mark Rigbye and Matt Hughes wrapped up the game leaving F & B 129 runs short of their target.

HOPPERS CRICKET – SEASON 2007

John Chesworth took over the captaincy from Martin Pallas for the 2007 season and attempted to make his

mark by organizing refurbishment of the all-weather wicket, which was looking increasingly thread-bare

after 11 years of service, with financial help from our ‘pitch-sharers’ Barton Grange.

The new strip was well used despite the appalling weather since Ribchester, currently groundless,

hired the facility to play their home games on Saturdays in Division 4 of the Palace Shield.

Meanwhile, in the Boddington’s Village Cricket League, Hoppers enjoyed a successful start.

Despite having five matches abandoned due to rain, at the halfway stage they were clear at the top of the table.

With 5 to play, Fulwood and Broughton drew level at the top but what could have been a decider on August 1st

was rained off. Three wins from the last three games, including the demolition of fancied Grimsargh

who had beaten F & B the previous week gave Hoppers their third outright championship.

After the sad demise of regular umpire Dick Leigh the previous November, Hoppers were fortunate to

secure the services of Keith Battersby, who wore the white coat with distinction for the season.

Thanks are also due to John Dewhurst who has filled the role of scorer when available and now

Chairman of Cricket, taking over from Neville Bolton who decided to stand down after many years in office.

Captain this season is Richie Sands.
