John played for Preston at both the old ground at Lea and at our current home at Lightfoot Green. He is credited with scoring the last try at the Lea ground against The President’s XV and also the first try at Lightfoot Green against Southport which place him firmly in the history books at Preston Grasshoppers.

Keith ‘Dad’ Brierly paid tribute to his former team mate saying ‘John was a very quick and elusive runner and also an excellent athlete. I believe a lot of his records stood for many years at Kirkham Grammar School. He left the club in the early seventies for Aberdeen University and on graduation made his life there. In later life he represented Scotland in the Veteran Games.’ John leaves his wife, Morag, and their two children.

His funeral took place last Thursday at Culross Abbey in Fife.

The club would like to express our sympathies to John’s friends and family.
