Summer Camp Success

Date: 06 August 2014

New PGRFC Community Rugby Coach Phil Mills delivered his first Summer Rugby Camp since his appointment to the CRC role in July.

The camp was held over three days from 30th July –1st August at the club’s Lightfoot Green ground and saw around 40 youngsters in attendance. Below Phil provides his thoughts on a fun filled three days for the coaches and youngsters alike.

“The first PGRFC Rugby Camp of the summer proved to be a success and was a very enjoyable three days for both coaches and youngsters. In addition to me there were three other coaches involved in the camp namely Ally Murray, Pete Altham and Rory McCormack. Together we delivered varied sessions across the three days. The sessions were mixed and included rugby related skills, game situations and also fun non-rugby games and team building exercises.

The days were split so that the rugby related skills and games were tackled during the morning sessions whilst the general fun games and teambuilding activities (which included things such as an assault course and rugby paintball) took place in the afternoon.

We split the youngsters into three age groups. The “minis” (the 5 – 8 year olds) formed the first group, the second “middle” group was made up of 9- 11 year olds whilst the “older” group was for those aged 11 – 13 years. This approach ensured the different age groups received appropriate coaching based on their rugby ability. The coaches swapped around the age groups each day so that the children saw a different face and experienced an alternative coaching approach.

The event was held at the club and we made full use of the facilities which ensured there was plenty of room to run the different activities. The majority of those taking part in the camp came mostly from the Preston area but it was pleasing that we also had some children attend from the Wigan and Leigh areas. For future reference everyone is welcome and the club is easy to find for those of you living outside the locality!

At the end of the three days the participants were awarded with a medal to show they had completed the three days and also received a “goody bag” which included tickets to a future Preston Grasshoppers 1st XV home game. We also made some awards with three trophies presented to the “Summer Camp Superstar”, “Best Try Scorer” and the “Most Improved Player” over the three days.

The award winners were:-

Most Improved Summer Camp Player – Jack Battersby

Summer Camp Best Try Scorer – Alex Carson

Summer Camp Superstar – Conor Kyriakou

Lots of fun was had by all and the feedback received was that all enjoyed their Summer Camp experience. I hope to see you all back for the second camp at the end of August and hopefully more new faces will come along as well”.
