A fond farewell and huge thanks to our senior players leaving the club

Jackie Ballard27 May - 12:28

Preston Grasshoppers says goodbye and thank you to eight senior players leaving the club this summer.

Whether moving on for new opportunities, retirement, travel or family commitments, we wish all the very best to Ed Rowell, Derek Ochieng, Asa Watson, Ged Boylan, Jonny Wild, Robbie Willetts, Owain Williams and Danny Maher, all of whom have made a valued contribution to Preston Grasshoppers both on and off the field.

Here, Hoppers 1st XV Head Coach Dan Orwin reflects on the commitment, character and impact each player has brought to the club, as we thank them and wish them every success for the future.

Ed Rowell has the travel bug!

Ed departs temporarily as he heads off travelling following his graduation from Lancaster University. A key figure in the 2nd XV in recent seasons, Ed’s attitude and commitment have been first class. Everyone at Hoppers wishes him well and looks forward to welcoming him back in the future.

Derrick Ochieng is moving away

Club favourite Derrick Ochieng leaves Preston due to work commitments. A hugely respected prop forward across the 2nd and 3rd XVs, Derrick’s positivity and commitment have made a lasting impact around the club. We thank him for everything and wish him every success for the future.

Asa Watson to focus on career and family

Utility forward Asa Watson leaves the club after balancing a new job and young family commitments. Since joining from Fleetwood ahead of the 2024-25 season, Asa brought outstanding professionalism and attitude to the squad. Everyone at Hoppers wishes Asa and his family all the very best.

Ged Boylan goes back to Sedgley

Ged Boylan returns to Sedgley Park following the end of his season-long loan spell. The talented young prop made 14 First XV appearances during the 2025-26 campaign and proved a valuable addition to the squad. We thank Ged for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

Jonny Wild hangs up his boots

Having previously worked with Jonny at Fylde, I dragged Jonny out of retirement in the 2024-25 season to help cover a run of injures in the front row. After answering the call to come out of retirement, Jonny is now hanging up his boots once again.

He made 11 First XV appearances and brought experience and commitment to the front row when the club needed it most. Everyone at Hoppers thanks Jonny for his tremendous contribution.

Robbie Willetts takes a step back

Back-row forward Robbie Willetts has decided to step away from the game following injury setbacks over the past two seasons. Since joining from Rossendale in 2023, Robbie made 42 First XV appearances and became a hugely respected figure both on and off the field.

His commitment, professionalism and leadership will be greatly missed. We wish Robbie, Imogen and their young family all the very best.

Owain Williams sets off to Sale

Winger Owain Williams leaves Hoppers to join Sale FC ahead of the 2026-27 season. Since arriving midway through the 2023-24 campaign, Owain has made 30 First XV appearances and scored 18 tries. His hard work and development have earned him the opportunity to play at a higher level, and everyone at Hoppers looks forward to following his progress.

Danny Maher takes a coffee break!

Danny Maher steps away from his role at the club to focus on the launch of his new business. Initially joining as Forwards Coach, Danny also made 14 First XV appearances and had a huge influence on the squad both on and off the field.

Danny has had a great career in National League Rugby, including selection for England Counties.

He's a good mate, and we go back a long way, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how quickly he has taken to coaching. He’s challenged players, supported staff, and has always put the team first. More than anything, he’s helped build the culture we’re proud of, one based on hard work, accountability, and genuine care for the people involved.

Danny will continue supporting the club in the background, and we thank him for his dedication, leadership and friendship.

Everyone at Hoppers wishes Danny and Kelly every success with their new venture. It would be great if people can support them! Head along to Fresco on Waterloo Road, South Shore, Blackpool for a coffee!

Travelling abroad, retiring, pursuing new opportunities and focusing on family life – we extend our sincere thanks to all eight players for their contributions to Preston Grasshoppers RFC and wish them every success in the next chapter.

PS: Our re-signings and new signings will be announced soon!
