A special welcome back to Murray and Lightowler both set for long-awaited return

Jackie Ballard18 Jun - 12:48

Preston Grasshoppers squad boosted by return of two familiar faces this season: Ally Murray and Jack Lightowler.

Yes, we'd like to post a special welcome to both players who have endured a frustrating year out with injury, but their return adds real strength and depth to the squad as preparations ramp up for the new campaign.

Second row Ally Murray returns following knee surgery that ruled him out for the entirety of last season. With 311 Hoppers caps to his name, Murray brings a wealth of experience, leadership and edge to the forward pack. His physicality, lineout presence and ability to consistently deliver at National League level will provide an immediate lift.

In the back three, Jack Lightowler also returns after a long-term absence. Still only 21 years old, Lightowler has already made 27 first-team appearances and was voted Players’ Player of the Season in 2023–24. Jack progressed through the Myerscough College AASE rugby programme, and through the Sale Sharks Academy system. His progress at Hoppers was halted, due to a serious shoulder injury sustained at Fylde in the 2024-25 season, making his return all the more significant.

Welcoming both players back, Head Coach Dan Orwin said: “It’s brilliant to have Ally and Jack back involved again after what’s been a tough period for both of them. Ally brings huge experience and standards and 300+ games for the club tells you everything about his consistency and what he means to Hoppers.

Jack is still a young player but already showed his quality before his injury, and being voted Players’ Player speaks volumes about how highly he’s regarded within the group. Credit to both of them for the way they’ve handled their rehab. They’ve worked incredibly hard to get back to this point and we’re looking forward to seeing them back out there in Hoppers’ shirts.”

Everyone at Lightfoot Green will be looking forward to seeing the pair back where they belong.
