Preston Grasshoppers make the trip across the Pennines tomorrow afternoon to face Hull RUFC in Round 3 of the National League 2 North season, looking to bounce back from last weekend’s narrow defeat to local rivals Fylde.
Hoppers began the campaign in style with a 46–24 victory over Billingham at Lightfoot Green before falling just short in a fiercely contested derby against Fylde, going down 20–24. Hull, meanwhile, are still searching for their first win of the season, having lost at home to Rossendale (18–22) and away at Hull Ionians (35–19).
The two sides know each other well, with head-to-head honours finely balanced in recent years. Across 20 league meetings, Hoppers edge the record 11–8, and last season saw the spoils shared with one win apiece.
Head Coach Dan Orwin is keen for his side to build momentum, noting that while last week’s loss was frustrating, it showed plenty of promise: “We were close against Fylde and created opportunities. The challenge now is to be more clinical and keep the standards high in every area of the game.”
There are changes in the squad, with Harrison Causey set to make his debut and Jacob Browne returning for his first outing of the season following suspension. Both will be eager to make an impact in what is expected to be a physical contest.
Wet conditions are forecast at The Ferens Ground, meaning set-piece accuracy and discipline will be crucial. Hoppers will be looking to impose themselves up front while unleashing their attacking threats when the chances come.
With both teams desperate to lay down an early marker and build momentum, another tight battle looks likely.
