Said lead was wrestled right back when Sammy Russell eluded the Otley defence to break through their defensive line and give Hoppers the lead once again with Freeman converting.
There was a lengthy stoppage due to a head injury to Otley's Tom Thorpe but that didn't halt Hoppers momentum, Freeman using his pace to burst away from the Otley players and score under the sticks and then converting his own try to make the score 19-7 after 20 minutes.
It was deja vu for the hosts 2nd try, another McCormack score pushed over from a line-out, Spensley's conversion off the mark this time.
It wasn't soon after that the hosts had levelled it up, Otley having been held up in the line-out switched the ball to the corner for Alex Jones to score and Spensley converted.
The momentum was truly on Otley's side and following a yellow card to Tom Ailes, Leon Mudd gave the Yorkshire side the lead, Spensley accurate with the conversion.
Hoppers made sure they weren't going into the half behind however, minutes after coming on Sam Kyle-Clay with a powerful drive to bring the visitors level, Freeman converting once again.
The 2nd half started quieter than the 1st but it was a controversial penalty that reignited the game into life with Otley the benefactors. Alfie Hewitt scoring the try which wasn't converted.
There was a moment of individual brilliance that followed, Mark Jennings taking the ball almost half the pitch shrugging off challenges to go over with Freeman converting to retake the lead.
Dan Orwin's side then put the game to bed, Hoppers captain Hugo Castle with a bursting run to score and then a brilliant counter attacking move started by Lewis Fusco who combined with Browne and Ben Haigh who stretched over to score.
Anthony McCormack scored a late consolation try for the hosts. The final score 47-38 to Preston Grasshoppers.
