Preston Grasshoppers 3rd/4th team completed their pre-season campaign with a hard-fought 15-7 victory over near neighbours Garstang 2nd/3rd, in a match played in superb spirits. A healthy crowd enjoyed the rugby played in ideal conditions, with the sun shining throughout most of the game.
Hoppers, despite having a squad of only 17 players (down to 16 as Richie Sands discovered he had a hamstring and pulled it in the warm up), dominated the first quarter with two well-worked tries. The first was scored by Tom Lyth with the second coming from a powerful pick-and-go by number 8 Connor Shelliker, who muscled over from a 5m scrum. Both conversions sailed wide. Following this early setback, Garstang struck back with a well-worked converted try of their own, keeping the contest tight. Some tremendous last ditch tackling by fullback, Cam Scott, snuffed out further threats.
The defensive work rate of the entire Hoppers team was exceptional, highlighted by a try-saving tackle from Paul Street, who bundled a Garstang player into touch just metres from the try line. The home side sealed the win in the final quarter when Stu Woodhouse coasted in on a fantastic arcing run to score a try 15 meters in from the touchline, putting the result beyond doubt. The conversion was missed...again, tut tut Tom.
This was a fantastic effort from the entire Preston Grasshoppers 3rd/4th squad, showing immense heart and teamwork against quality opposition. Thanks to the Garstang lads for the game.
The victory sets a brilliant tone for what promises to be an exciting season for the club.
