Hoppers strengthen 1st XV squad with two exciting additions ahead of 2026–27 campaign

Jackie Ballard25 Jun - 10:43

We are delighted to announce two exciting new signings with Josh Ree returning to Lightfoot Green and Matt Ashcroft joining from Fylde RUFC.

Both players bring valuable National League experience, versatility, and a strong understanding of the demands required at this level. With proven quality across the backline and forward pack respectively, their additions further strengthen Dan Orwin’s squad as Hoppers continue to build a competitive and ambitious team for the new campaign.

Ree Returns: Hoppers add proven National One quality

It's fantastic to confirm the signing of Josh Ree, who rejoins the club from Sedgley Park.

The 26-year-old New Zealand-born playmaker returns to Lightfoot Green with a strong track record at National League One level, having gained valuable experience with both Sedgley Park and Darlington Mowden Park. He brings proven quality, composure, and a clear understanding of the demands of rugby at a higher tier.

Equally comfortable at fly-half or full-back, Ree’s versatility adds genuine value in key decision-making positions and provides flexibility within the squad.

Having previously had a spell with the club during the 2024–25 season, Ree is no stranger to the Hoppers environment and is well placed to make an immediate impact.

Head Coach Dan Orwin said: “We’re really pleased to have Josh has come back to us. He’s a very intelligent player who understands the game well and has a great skill set. He played nine matches for us in the 2024–25 season after we signed him from DMP, and he contributed to some strong performances and results. He was also very popular with the players and fully bought into the club culture.”

Ree is excited to return: “I’m absolutely stoked to sign back with Hoppers, a club with so much history and such strong support. I really felt that when I was here for a short stint in 2025, and I’m excited to be back out on the pitch at Lightfoot Green with the lads this season. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

The signing represents a strong addition of quality, experience, and versatility as Hoppers continue to add to an already competitive squad ahead of the new season.

Ashcroft adds proven National League Experience to Hoppers pack

Another fantastic addition to the squad is Matt Ashcroft (26), who joins the club from Fylde RUFC ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Matt, a versatile utility forward arrives at Lightfoot Green with a wealth of experience at National League level, having made over 110 appearances for Fylde.
A former Kirkham Grammar School student, and Lancashire U18, Lancashire U20, and North of England U20 player, Ashcroft brings durability, physicality, and a clear understanding of the demands of the competition.

Comfortable operating right across the pack, his versatility provides genuine value, offering both depth and flexibility across key forward positions.

Head Coach Dan Orwin said: “I coached Matt at Fylde when he was first breaking through as a senior player, so I know exactly what he brings. He’s a fantastic signing for us — mobile, physical, and comfortable across a number of positions in the pack.
He also brings a lot of National League experience, which will be really valuable for the group, and we can’t wait to see him in action at Hoppers.”

Ashcroft can't wait to get started: “I’m really excited to be joining Preston Grasshoppers for the upcoming season. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see what we can achieve this year, and I’m especially looking forward to working again under Dan, who coached me during my time at Fylde.

“He played a big role in my development, and I’m keen to continue learning and contributing to the team. I can’t wait to get started, meet everyone involved with the club, and help drive success both on and off the field.”

This signing represents a strong addition of experience, versatility, and reliability, as Hoppers continue to build a competitive, driven squad ahead of the new season.

Ree returns with experience, creativity, and familiarity with the Hoppers environment, while Ashcroft adds physicality, reliability, and versatility across the forwards. Together, the pair represent two key additions as the club continues its preparations for an exciting season ahead. Take a look at our fixtures for the season and come down and see them in action!
