Lancashire Community Club of the Year

Date: 18 January 2015

On Friday night the 2014 Lancashire Sports Awards took place at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool with 8 awards up for grabs.

The club was nominated in the Community Club of the Year category after winning the same award at the Preston Sports Awards last year. John Powell had won the ‘Service to Sport’ award at the Preston awards but unfortunately this wasn’t a category at the county awards.

We’re delighted to report that the judging panel, chaired by Ex-Blackpool and England footballer Jimmy Armfield, judged that Preston Grasshoppers RFC was the winner of the category!

Club captain John Peterson and Chairman of the Mini/Junior section Hugh Duckworth together with Club General Manager Richard Ellis, were presented with the award by Commonwealth Games Boxing gold medalist Scott Fitzgerald who also hails from Preston.

Interviewed by the host for the evening, BBC’s Graham Liver, Richard commented “The award is testament to all the hard work put in by numerous volunteers, parents and staff at the club. We couldn’t have won the award without the hours they give up that ensure Preston Grasshoppers can serve the community on such a wide scale”
