2nd’s hold on for fine victory over Macc

Date: 19 February 2012

Hoppers 2’s 23 Macclesfield 2’s 22

Eighteen points from Tom Smith saw the second team secure a hard earned victory against defending champions Macclesfield. Despite a sodden pitch and a stiff breeze Mike Lough’s men should be credited for sticking to their attacking principles.

Smith scored a fine first half try to go with two conversions and three penalties the last of which turned out to be crucial. However the pick of the action was Matt Hughes try shortly before half time. Josh Purnell countered before releasing the Welshman who skinned his man and finished for a fine try.

Macclesfield’s best work came via their forwards and their experience told in some of the tight exchanges. Hoppers though dominated he scrummage and put in a tremendous defensive effort with Austin, Mabaya and Wells all putting a good shift in.

Macclesfield did their best to try and overturn Hoppers 20-14 lead throughout the second half. However the home side kept the men from Cheshire at arms length. The visitors had a penalty in the closing stages but the effort fell short and Hoppers held on for a deserved victory.

The win keeps Hoppers in touch with Caldy and Sedgley Park at the top of the table and they remain in the championship mix. Next week they travel to Chester for what is sure to be a competitive contest.
