Alex Keay Returns To Hoppers

Date: 16 March 2023

PGRFC is delighted to announce the return of former Director of Rugby and Head Coach Alex Keay to Lightfoot Green. Alex led Hoppers for several seasons from the 2002/3 season and is remembered for leading the club to its first ever Lancashire Cup win during his first spell in charge.

Alex stabilised the club as a competing force at the top of National Two during his tenure before departing in 2010 to take on the role of Director of Rugby at Durham University. His time with Durham has been hugely successful with five BUCS Championship Title wins as well as numerous BUCS 7’s and Cup wins over the last decade. Over that time the University has produced many current professional players through its performance program now playing Premiership and International rugby.

He played for and captained the Saracens club in a stellar playing career that also saw him represent the Barbarians. He returns to the club as Director of Rugby with effect from 1st March 2023 signing a two and a half year contract.

Speaking on his appointment, Chairman of Rugby Mike Bailey said “I am thrilled to see Alex back at the club. Alex has a fantastic track record in the game and his knowledge and experience will be invaluable to the squad and the club as a whole. We’ve remained firm friends since he took over at Durham and what he has achieved there is outstanding. His standing in the game is huge and he’s always kept in touch with what’s been happening at the club. I’m really looking forward to him getting involved and working with him to take the Club forward”.

Speaking on his return Alex said “ I am delighted to return to Hoppers it is a very special Club with a place close to my heart. The Club has a rich rugby history, fantastic facilities and huge potential playing opportunities. I am looking forward to helping Hoppers develop a style of play that is both exciting, enjoyable and successful for players, members and supporters.”

He added “Ideally we will endeavour to build on our development of players through our Mini, Juniors and Colts teams ( Knee High to a Grasshopper ) along with welcoming players both local, national and international to the Hoppers family and rugby aspirations”.
