Bob Thornthwaite

Date: 31 August 2023

The club has been advised that former player, Bob Thornthwaite, passed away yesterday.

The club’s thoughts are with Bob’s friends and family at this time.

A few words from our President:

What a character! I first met Bob just after he came out of the army in the early 70s and we struck up a friendship that lasted to this day. My memories of Bob are too numerous to mention so here are just a few but I am sure lots of people will have more.

Bob has the distinction of being Preston’s first streaker when he left the Warehouse nightclub one Saturday night. His infamous tattoos were particularly noticeable!!

He ran the Preston half marathon for the Heartbeat charity with a dustbin on his back collecting money and then emptying it out on my patio before counting the proceeds.

He enjoyed touring with the lower teams to the South of France and there were many escapades that we got up to – but what goes on on tour, stays on tour!

Bob was a talented drummer and whilst on a tour based in Bristol, he took over the drums of a band playing at the Bristol Gasworks RFC dinner. He was the star of the show.

Right up to the time that he had to have his prosthetic leg fitted (and even that did not faze him) he still remained his incorrigible self, taking it all in his stride with his own brand of humour – his cup was always half full.

He has always worked hard for his army veteran colleagues, and he will be sorely missed by everyone that he touched.

RIP Bob
