Club Statement

On Thursday 4th April the Lancashire Evening Post ran a story on the front page about the possibility of Preston Grasshoppers RFC selling the current site for housing and moving to a new site.

The story contains the following quote from Preston Grasshoppers RFC Chairman, George Erdozain:

“At present, the management committee is looking at viability of including the club and its land in the Council’s revised document as being zoned for residential development.

“The club has also been invited by Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council to engage with them and other stakeholders in the masterplanning of new highway and housing development for the North West area of Preston which includes Cottam and areas around Lightfoot Lane.

“We have committed resources to this process as we see long term benefits for the area and the community. We are also looking at other options available to secure a positive future and we have had some approaches but no formal offers have been made. There has been speculation made in the press recently that may suggest we are in advanced discussions with a local developer, but this is categorically not the case.

“Furthermore, we would only seriously consider a move, if we could retain the club’s welcoming culture and secure a sub-regionally important sports facility which will be an asset for the wider community. Finally, any decision would not be made without our members’ support and if they didn’t support a move, it would not go forward.”

Customers and members who have booked functions, particularly weddings, in advance should be reassured their functions will take place at our venue.
