U10s season opener

Date: 21 September 2015

An impressive twenty lads from Hoppers Under 10’s turned up for an extra weekend day of Rugby on Saturday at Kirkham Grammar School, with Stonyhurst St Marys Hall also there to play.

The Hoppers boys were split into two teams of equal strength and played in a mini festival of 6 games, with one team from Kirkham and one team from SMH.

With this being the first game under new rules following the move up to under 10’s, the Hoppers boys were a little slower to get to grips with the technicalities of the ruck within the game.  Once the boys had warmed up and ran a couple of drills in between games the Hoppers boys started to play some really good rugby.  There were some excellent phases of play, both in attack and defence, with thoroughly competitive rucking and fast ball play from the breakdowns creating enough gaps for our players to run through.  Equally in defence our boys tackled well, with some very speedy Kirkham and SMH boys to keep under wraps, a lot of the hoppers boys displaying a real never say die attitude chasing attackers the full length of the field to make tackles.

All boys did themselves and the hoppers shirt proud, with two wins, 2 draws and a loss from the five games that both teams played in.  All came away having learnt a lot about the increased intensity that comes with under 10’s rugby and a great platform to move on from for the rest of the season.
