Hoppers Add Powerful Lamprey to Squad

Date: 19 June 2017

PGRFC are delighted to announce the signing of powerful back row forward Matthew Lamprey. Lamprey 29, comes to Hoppers after spells with Sedgley Tigers and Fylde.

He spent 6 years with the Tigers making 120 appearances in National One and Two scoring 48 tries before making the switch to Fylde last summer where he made a further 27 appearances scoring two tries.

He has been a regular member of the Lancashire Senior Squad appearing in Twickenham finals of the County Championship. He scored a crucial try in the 2013/4 County Championship Final win over Cornwall whilst he has also represented the county at age group level before graduating to the senior squad.

Speaking on the addition of Lamprey to the squad, Head Coach Paul Arnold said “Matt is one the best Number 8’s in the County and I am very excited that he has decided to come to Hoppers. After deciding to leave Fylde he has had plenty of offers from all over the North West but he is enthused by the vision we have for the club and where we want to take things on the field. He will be an excellent addition to the squad”.

On his move to Lightfoot Green, Matthew said “I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead and I have set myself some big goals/targets for next season. I have no experience of the league we are going into but going to new places is exciting as is the opportunity to playing on the brand new AGP for every home game. We should be able to play some exciting rugby on a fast-consistent pitch and I believe this will suit my style of play”.

Arnold added “We begin our pre-season training next week and I am really looking forward to getting started. We have recruited well to complement the squad we already had in place and we now have a big summer of preparation ahead”.

Lamprey’s signing adds to those of Paul Millea, Alex Hurst, George Skofic, James Fitzpatrick, Connor Johnson, Oli Trippier and of course Head Coach Arnold.

Welcome to Hoppers Matt!!
