Preston Grasshoppers vs. York – 18th September 2021, 2:30pm
Preston Grasshoppers once again welcome new League visitors to Lightfoot Green, this time it’s York rugby club who’ll be gracing us with their presence.
Our visitors achieved promotion into North Premier by way of topping North East 1 by some considerable margin when rugby ceased back in 2020. After pipping Scarborough to top Yorkshire Division 1 at Level 7 in 2018, our visitors consolidated for a season in North East 1 before gaining promotion to North Premier.
York RUFC are a club on the march up the RFU League structure, after languishing in Yorkshire 1 for many seasons they have suddenly made an upsurge during the last few years, and with that in mind we’ll surely be seeing a lot more of them in future seasons.
Like ourselves, our visitors run a number of senior men and women’s sides together with Junior and Mini rugby at their Clifton Park ground. York’s website shows a picture of an impressive looking Sports Club facility, a venue I’m sure the 1869 Club members will be looking forward to gracing later in the season.
Preston Grasshoppers and their travelling band of loyal supporters were collectively brought down to earth with a bump last Saturday at Cross Green. Otley defended well for long periods with the Hoppers attacks being thwarted time and time again, whilst at the other end, the home side gave a display of clinical finishing. Only a late consolation try gave any solace for the visitors. This week’s opponents York on the other hand, put Kirkby Lonsdale to the sword, and like Hoppers the previous week sent their opponents home pointless. Saturday’s task at Lightfoot Green looks like being a tough one.
After another home game scheduled for next Saturday against Macclesfield, the 1869 Club are running a supporters coach (£20pp) to Sandal the following Saturday. There will be the usual stop for lunch en-route, returning approximately 1 hour after the final whistle.
