Preston Grasshoppers vs. Wirral – 26th March 2022, KO 2:30
After a weekend break, Preston Grasshoppers welcome eighth place Cheshire side Wirral to Lightfoot Green for what will be just their second visit for a 1st XV League encounter and the penultimate home League game of the season.
Those who travelled across the Mersey for the game at The Memorial Ground, witnessed a tense affair in which Hoppers failed to break down the resilient home defence during the last quarter of the game, thus denying them a winning bonus point.
Looking back to the game at Marl Pits, and as JLP mentioned in his report of the game, Hoppers have now kept their opponents to nil on the scoreboard on five occasions this term and the sixty seven points winning margin ticked off another record broken this season, the previous best being back in 2005 at New Brighton. The tenth game undefeated in away games is also a record as before the game in East Lancashire, the record stood at nine during a couple of periods. Lichfield from the 12th of September 1998 to Aspatria on the 23rd of January 1999 together with a win at Sandal on the 2nd of September 2017 to Birkenhead Park 13th of January 2018.
Back to our next opponents Wirral RUFC who were founded in 1936 with Old Boy’s from Wirral Grammar School and once the RFU League structure was formed they gradually elevated themselves to Level 5 of the pyramid which where they stand in the League structure to date.
There have been just the three meetings between the two clubs, with Hoppers running out winners on each occasion.
The 1869 Club are running a supporters coach to Alnwick for a first time visit, and due to the distance, an earlier than normal start will be required. The usual arrangements will be in place with a notice in the foyer for names to be added and the departure time.
