Matthew aiming high

Date: 02 May 2012

Preston Grasshoppers RFC are delighted that up and coming hooker Matthew Beaty was part of the England Under 17 squad that recently defeated its French counterparts at Harrow School. England won a keenly contested encounter 28-24.

Matthew has played through the age groups at Hoppers and currently attends Lancaster RGS whilst he also part of the Sale Sharks Academy. The Under 17 squad is part of the Development process for next seasons Under 18 national squad and is coached by John Fletcher and Ian Peel.

Speaking on his England appearances so far Matthew said “I’m really proud to play for my country. It’s a massive honour and something I want to continue to do. I want to be the best player that I can be and hopefully can go on to bigger things. Hoppers is my club and I know they are really keen to help me develop my game and help me be the best player I can be”.

Speaking on Matthew’s selection Gareth Dyer said “We are very proud of Matthew and are delighted with his selection for the England squad. He is very much part of our plans for the next few seasons whilst he takes his first steps in senior rugby. He’s a local lad and we want to help in his development so that he can fully realise his talent. Playing his first senior rugby at Hoppers will give him valuable experience that he can use as a stepping stone to higher honours. We produce a lot of talented youngsters who have realistic ambitions of going into the professional game. In tandem with the Sale Academy we want our home grown youngsters to play for their home club to get their first taste of senior rugby as part of their development. Hopefully this then becomes a springboard to move up to the highest level”
