Mini / Junior weekend round-up

Date: 21 November 2016

With Minis teams away at Waterloo and Junior teams in cup action, the season is now in full swing!

The Under 7s had a squad of 11 at Waterloo, a great turn out! With 3 games running simultaneously, all players got plenty of rugby!  Waterloo were strong but Hoppers held a good defensive line and made some great tags. These games are really driving the core skills and great teamwork. It was really great to get feedback from the Waterloo coaches about a level of sportsmanship with the hoppers squad that they don’t always see!

The Under 8s took 14 players to Waterloo. Waterloo hadn’t previously utilised the six tag turnover rule, however they embraced the rule and at times it paid dividends as their defensive work was commendable causing a number of turnovers. Hoppers stuck at it with people staying in position and off loading before the tag to avoid the tag count and consequently turnover. Some great support play and decent individual and team worked tries caused Hoppers to level out the scoring with Waterloo in the second and third games.

The Under 13s suffered defeat 0-30* away at Southport in a Lancs cup match.

The Under 14s had a cup match away at Warrington – always very difficult opponents. Hoppers played really well, with the backs always looking dangerous with ball in hand, and forwards dominating the scrums and breakdowns. However Hoppers discipline wasn’t as good, conceding a huge number of penalties that continually stalled momentum. Fortunately Hoppers defence was impregnable and Warrington were unable to capitalise. Hoppers scored a converted try in each half and won 14-0.
