The power of Twitter

Date: 18 March 2012

Saturday gave us a remarkable example of how the clubs recently established twitter account, @rugbyhoppers, is proving a huge success.

The second XV had travelled to Stockport having suffered 3 late withdrawals in the morning and second XV manager Ade Jebb had ‘tweeted’ this from the clubs account to let our followers know we could be in for a tough afternoon.

Chris Todd who has featured for the 2nd’s this season and is due to set off for Australia soon was sat at home watching Scotland vs Italy when he decided to send messages of support to the Hoppers teams via his twitter account. He saw the 2nd’s were short so offered to drive down.

Chris says ‘It was a strange day really. I was sat watching a poor Italy vs Scotland game and just checked twitter to see how the games were getting on. I knew both the 1st and 2nd team had big games so I was going to send a good luck message. I saw that the 2nds were short so replied saying I would throw the boots in the bag and drive down to help. Jebby tweeted me the post code and I flew down to Stockport to help the lads. A mad day all round!’

2nd XV manager Ade Jebb said ‘We are very grateful to Chris for coming to Stockport at such short notice, it gave the players a real lift to know that we had that extra body on the  bench. When he came on for the last 15 minutes he saved a try with some excellent cover defence.’

Hoppers twitter account now has over 700 followers and keeps people up to date with all the goings on at Lightfoot Green. Many people follow the games on twitter with both the 1st and 2nd XV scores being updated live. To follow @rugbyhoppers just set up a twitter account and follow us here, www.twitter.com/rugbyhoppers.
