Wirral away for 1st XV

Wirral vs. Preston Grasshoppers – KO 2:15, 27th November 2021

Preston Grasshoppers journey across the river Mersey to play Cheshire side Wirral this Saturday in what will be just the second visit to the Memorial Ground for our senior side.

As expected, Rossendale belied their lowly position in the league last week, giving Hoppers a tough first forty minutes, however the home side took almost full control during the second period, gradually pulling away from the visitors on the scoreboard to record another bonus point victory.

A notable achievement last Saturday saw Ally Murray (pictured above in 2015) play his two hundred and nineteenth League game for Hoppers, a feat which moves him above Russell Flynn with only ‘Chaddy’ ahead of him.

Our hosts this week from Cheshire currently sit in ninth place and before suffering a loss at Otley last Saturday had won their last three games. They are currently undefeated this season at their home ground, recording victories over Blackburn, Kirkby Lonsdale, Alnwick and bottom side Northwich.

So with the home side’s current home form in mind, and those who can recall our last visit to Wirral when we came away with a narrow fourteen points to seven victory from a game played in awful conditions, it’s fair to say Saturday’s game won’t be an easy one.

Wirral RUFC were founded in 1936 with Old Boy’s from Wirral Grammar School and once the RFU league structure was formed they gradually elevated themselves to Level  5 of the pyramid which is the peak of their League achievements to date.

There have been just the two meetings between the two clubs with Hoppers winning both games.

The 1869 Club are running a supporters coach to Wirral with the usual arrangements.
